American Kestrel and
Mouse The bird, mouse, and portions of the
stump were first painted with white acrylic, sculpted thick and thin to create
texture, on acid-free brown mat board. Next, washes of watercolor added
delicate color and shadow to what was basically a white ghostly image on a dark
background. As a finishing touch, I added strokes of pastel to the background.
The size of a Robin, the American kestrel,
Falco sparverius, is the smallest falcon in North America. This striking
raptor, with black stripes running from the eye and the back of the head to its
neck and golden breast feathers speckled with black, ranges from Alaska across
Canada and throughout the United States southward into central Mexico, and the
Caribbean. The original mixed media
painting, presented in a 3" wide dark walnut hardwood frame with matching
hardwood filet (double matted in acid-free tan suede with an outer dimension of
28" x 24"), is available for $3,200.00. Limited edition prints and note cards
are also available.
