Baby Eastern Screech Owl

Part of the baby animal series that I painted for note cards, this baby screech owl sketch is full of personality. I'm especially pleased with the rendering of its eyes. They capture the glassiness of a living animal as well as the penetrating stare of the vigilant raptor it will become.

The Eastern Screech Owl, Megascops asio, is a small, stocky, short-tailed, and broad-winged owl. It has a large round head with ear tufts, yellow eyes, and a yellowish bill. Adults have either rusty (referred to as "red-phase") or dark gray (the gray-phase) intricately patterned plumage with streaking on the under parts. Their breeding habitat is deciduous or mixed woods in eastern North America.

The original pastel pencil is in our family collection but limited edition prints and note cards are available.
