Bald Eagle "Don't Tread on
Me" The inspiration for my original
watercolor was a photograph taken over 40 years ago by Frederick Kent Truslow,
a world-famous photographer of birds, highly published by the National
Geographic Society. From a perch supporting their nest high in the air, the
eagle watches With a wingspan of nearly
seven feet, the Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, is our national bird and
a worthy symbol of the United States of America. Adults have a brown body with
a white head and tail, bright yellow irises, and a fierce hooked beak.
Juveniles are completely brown except for yellow feet and black talons. Males
and females have identical plumage coloration; females are about 25 percent
larger than males. Eagle diets consist mainly of fish but they are
opportunistic feeders. Designed by American
general and statesman Christopher Gadsden, the 1775 yellow Gadsden flag
depicted the 13 colonies as a coiled rattlesnake. Below were the defiant words,
"Don't Tread on Me." The original
acrylic/watercolor is in a private collection but limited edition prints and
note cards are available.
