Mourning Dove
This watercolor was done rather "loosely"
as an artist would say. Meaning, I first laid down a pencil sketch then quickly
washed color over it, mostly in a palette of browns and yellow ochre. Creating
it on a small scale (a 4" x 5" piece of acid-free watercolor paper) and leaving
the background white, I feel it captures the simple grace and serenity of these
animals. The Mourning Dove, Zenaida
macroura, ranges from Central America to southern Canada, including
offshore islands. Habitats include various open and semi-open environments in
agricultural and urban areas. The species has adapted well to areas altered by
humans. In many States, it is hunted as a game bird for both sport and meat.
Mourning Doves are light grey and brown, generally muted in color, with an
irridescent pink/lavender sheen in sunlight. Males and females are similar in
appearance. The species is generally monogamous, with two squabs (young) per
brood. Both parents care for the young for a time.
The framed original watercolor, presented in a 2.5" wide
barn-grey stressed mahogany wooden frame (triple matted in walnut brown on
beige on walnut brown with an outer dimension of 14.5" x 15.5"), is available
for $595.00. Limited edition prints and note cards are also available.
