Mourning Dove on a Fence Post

Entirely different from my other Mourning Dove watercolor, this one was done in a broader palette - brown umber, Winsor blue, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna. I painted a wet-in-wet background with the blue and ochre. In nature, the muted colors of these birds blend well with the open fields, trees, and shrubs they frequent.

Mourning doves have a low mournful sound (hence the name) that to the untrained ear may sound like an owl. These birds are common in rural areas in all parts of the USA, as well as city parks and in winter at suburban feeders. In some states they are hunted as a game bird while others protect them as a "songbird." Although good flyers, they don't perch at feeders, dining instead on the seeds that fall to the ground.
