Pintail Drake
One of my first works of art, this simple
black-and-white charcoal pencil sketch is all about reflections of this
beautiful duck and the wake it creates gliding through the still water.
The Pintail or Northern Pintail, Anas
acuta, is a fairly large duck, with a long pointed tail that gives rise to
its name. The male has a very distinctive brown, grey, and white appearance,
whereas the female has mainly light brown plumage and a shorter tail.
Northern Pintails are widely occurring
ducks that inhabit open wetlands, nesting on the ground, often some distance
from water. They breed in the northern areas of Europe, Asia, and North
America. It is strongly migratory and winters south of its breeding range to
the equator. The original charcoal sketch
is in a private collection but limited edition prints and note cards are
available.
