Cinderella
Amaryllis It seemed fitting to paint
this subject in bold watercolors with fine brush strokes on white paper. The
lack of background is a stark contrast to its flowers and the unlikely looking
stem that rises above the leaves and emergent large bulb. For my family, an
"Amaryllis" has always been a special gift around the winter holidays. In fact,
I bought Mom an amaryllis in a beautiful cardinal and holly cachepot as a
present for her birthday, December 16, 2006 but she never got to enjoy it then.
She suffered a brain aneurism December 12 and was hospitalized for the next
three months. Now recovered, she anticipates its winter blooms.
Hippeastrum is a genus of about 70-75 species
and 600+ hybrids and cultivars of bulbous plants in the family Amaryllidaceae,
native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas from Argentina north
to Mexico and the Caribbean. These plants are popularly but erroneously known
as Amaryllis, an African genus in the same family. The flower colors include
red, rose, pink, white, orange, yellow and pale green with variations on these
including different colored stripes and edges on the petals. The Cinderella
cultivar is one of the most striking with its massive vivid red blooms and
white star centers. The original
watercolor, presented in a 3" wide swirled silver-peach finished hardwood frame
(double matted in acid-free white on light pink with an outer dimension of 27"
x 28"), is available for $2,200.00. Limited edition prints and note cards are
also available.
