Daylilies
Orange After making a light pencil
sketch on a fiberglass-textured art paper, I loosely painted the entire scene
with watercolor then spattered the background. To heighten the drama of the
art, I highlighted the blossoms and buds with acrylic paint so they would "pop"
(i.e., appear 3-dimensional and have greater overall contrast).
Daylily is the common name of the species, hybrids, and
cultivars of the genus Hemerocallis. Considered by many the perfect
perennial, daylilies are available in a rainbow of colors, adapt to various
soil and light conditions, bloom from late spring until autumn, and survive
with very little care in a wide range of climates. Originally native from
Europe to China, Korea, and Japan, their large showy flowers have made them
popular worldwide. There are over 60,000 registered daylily cultivars. The
flowers of most species open at sunrise and wither at sunset, possibly replaced
by another one on the same stem the next day. Others are night
bloomers. The original watercolor/acrylic
painting, presented in a 1.5" wide spattered dark green wooden frame edged in
black (single matted in an acid-free orange-core white mat incised with a
double V-groove; outer dimension 22" x 18"), is available for $995.00. Limited
edition prints and note cards are also available.
