Kwanzan Cherry II
I love the shape of the Kwanzan leaves and
tree, and the all-over pinkness of its early spring blooms. In this
watercolor, I focused on a single branch, placed it on the diagonal,
and gave it the greatest contrast.
The Kwanzan Cherry, Prunus serrulata 'Kwanzan', is one of the
showiest of all Japanese trees. It has large deep-pink double flowers
growing in clumps that last longer than most other flowering cherry
trees. Unlike all other flowering cherry trees, Kwanzans begin to
grow leaves while the flowers are still in bloom. It bears no fruit
since the 'Kwanzan' variety is a sterile hybrid. Primarily found in
Japan, the Kwanzan cherry tree will also grow in the United States.
Spectacular in flower, it has been planted along with Yoshino Cherry
in Washington, D.C. and Macon, Georgia for their annual Cherry Blossom
Festivals. The original watercolor
is in a private collection but limited edition prints and note cards
are available. Click
