I raise orchids for a hobby and especially like the paphiopedilums, or lady-slipper orchids. Striking plants, they are easy to grow and bloom once or twice a year. The painting was done in a very exacting botanical style but the background was purposely executed loose and watery for a painterly contrast and a more restful overall mood.
