Baby Eastern
Cottontail Rabbit The original
carbon and pastel pencil sketch was one of four I created for a note
card series of North American baby animals. Although only a few simple
lines are used, the animal's soft furry shape and personality emerge.
The large eyes and ears of this baby are alert as he nibbles on the
green leaves before him. The Eastern
Cottontail, Sylvilagus floridanus, is one of the most common
rabbit species in North America. These cottontails are chunky red-brown
or gray-brown in appearance with large hind feet, long ears, and a
short fluffy white tail. Their underside fur is white with a rusty
patch on the tail. Eastern cottontails can be found in meadows and
shrubby areas of the eastern and southwestern United States, southern
Canada, eastern Mexico, Central America and northernmost South America.
Originally not found in New England, it has been introduced there
and now competes for habitat with the native New England cottontail.
The original pastel pencil is in our family
collection but limited edition prints and note cards are available.
