Deer in the Snow
This scene from my imagination was painted
with only two watercolors - dark umber (a rich brown) and Payne's
Grey (a beautiful deep blue). It was done over 30 years ago as a special
gift for my father, Milton DeMoranville, who died February 2006. He
always told visitors "This is the best painting my daughter ever did
because she created it for me." Dad was an avid hunter and outdoorsman
all his life who taught me to hunt when I was quite young and to love
nature. That's a great legacy to leave a child! Virginia
white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, are found throughout
most of the continental United States, southern Canada, Mexico, Central
America, and northern portions of South America. Despite being the
most popular game animal in the region, the deer population is larger
today than in colonial times. This increase is due to several factors:
cut-over woods and grown up fields that provide favorable habitat;
lack of large natural predators like mountain lion and wolves; the
polygamous habits of bucks, and the natural fecundity of the females.
It is unusual for a female to drop less than two fawns; sometimes
she will bear as many as four. The
original watercolor is in our family collection but limited edition
prints and note cards are available.
