Newborn Fawn
This fawn was still wet with birth
fluids when our next-door neighbor, Diane Goodin discovered it in
our woods along the creek that flows to the Occoquan River, VA. Worried
that it would die without its mother, Diane fed it milk from a bottle
while kneeling on the ground (what a mess her legs were the next day
from the poison ivy painted in the foreground). I assured her that
its mother was nearby, probably watching us. We photographed it and
left the woods. Sure enough when Diane came back a little while later
to give it more milk, it was gone, most likely reunited with its mother.
Virginia whitetails, Odocoileus
virginianus, are medium-sized deer found throughout most of the
continental United States, southern Canada, Mexico, Central America,
northern portions of South America as far south as Peru, and some
countries in Europe. Despite hunting, deer populations have increased
in Virginia over the last few decades to the point that they have
become pests to many suburban landowners. The
framed original watercolor is in a private collection but limited
edition prints and note cards are available.
