Penny for Your Thoughts
The appeal of this
scene is its universality and illusive story. We don't know why this
little girl is dressed up and barefoot, who she might be, nor what
she might be pondering on the beach seemingly alone. What makes this
a good painting is the careful sketch of the child and the spontaneous
watercolor washes of clear color on a simple background.
The goal for the series on children that I'm
painting, I want to examine the unique and invaluable elements of
childhood. through art - children at play, interacting with pets,
and quiet times alone. My own childhood was a rural one surrounded
by family, friends, pets, wildlife, and flowers in a small country
town. A more simple setting to grow up than most of today's children
have - no drugs, no crime, and lots of the great outdoors in our town.
I had chores and studies to do before I could play, we ate our meals
together at the family table, and the whole family had an early bedtime.
Then we didn't even lock our cars or houses and the neighbors reported
to your parents when you did something wrong. The
original watercolor is in a private collection but limited edition
prints and note cards are available.
