Brandywine in Port

This watercolor of a bright blue surf clam fishing vessel, was painted en plein air, a French expression meaning "in the open air". I was sitting on the dock in the foreground facing the piers and town of Chincoteague, VA.

The surf clam commercial fishery takes place mostly in offshore waters from Virginia to Massachusetts. In the 1940s, a hydraulic system was developed that pumps water into muddy sediments and raises the large clams high enough to be captured by a dredge hauled along the ocean bottom. When I painted the Brandywine (note the hydraulic dredge on deck), Chincoteague Island was the homeport for at least four ships in this fleet. The fleet now hails from New Jersey.

The original watercolor is in a private collection but limited edition prints and note cards are available.
