Dune Silhouette

The sun setting over Tom's Cove and Chincoteague Island beyond signals day's end at beautiful Assateague Island, VA. I painted this watercolor from photos I took after we had prepared a beach bonfire for students at Wallops Island Marine Consortium to celebrate the 4th of July.

In 1962, Assateague Island National Seashore was established for the purpose of protecting the island in the states of Virginia and Maryland. Visitors travel here for the cool sea breezes, some to find solitude at more remote beach areas. Sea shell collecting, surf-fishing, crabbing, four-wheel driving, sunbathing, and swimming in the cool ocean waves are just a few things you will find to do here.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, on the Virginia end of Assateague Island, is famous for bird watching due in part to its prime location along the Atlantic Flyway and a series of man-made ponds which make it a vital resting and feeding area for hundreds of different kinds of migratory birds. Wild ponies, white-tailed and Sika deer, horseshoe crabs, and shellfish can be found while you explore the natural features of this unique ecosystem.

The original watercolor is in a private collection but limited edition prints of the original painting and note cards are available.
