Final Resting Place

This nostalgic scene of a derelict oyster barge along the Chincoteague Causeway, VA is no more. Photographed in 1979, when I lived on the Eastern Shore and taught marine ecology to high school and college students at the Wallops Island Marine Science Consortium, now not even a single piece of the boat remains. Shifting tides, storms, barnacles, shipworms, and the weather have completed the relentless process of erosion. The channel and marsh, however, appear the same today as then.

I chose twilight as the time of day to heighten the sense of solitude, perhaps loneliness, and executed the watercolor original with a wet-on-wet sky and water. For me, it's about nature's power ("...ashes to ashes, dust to dust...").

The original watercolor is in a private collection but limited edition prints and note cards are available.
