Sailing In
I remember the first time I saw such a
scene. While driving bayside roads of the Eastern Shore, suddenly I saw about
six colorful sails cutting the sky above the trees. It turned out to be a
gaggle of sailboat rentals. Fun in the sun! I painted in pastels a single
Sunfish amongst three Hobie Cats. Designed
in 1951 by Cortlandt Heyniger and Alex Byran, the Sunfish is a miracle of
simplicity, low-cost, and function. It requires just two lines to control and
the boat can be set up in less than five minutes. The patented kick-up rudder
system allows full beach landings with no problem. The hard-chine hull and low
sail plan provide unmatched stability and a forgiving feel.
Hobie Alter began manufacturing Hobie Cats, a small
catamaran (or two-hulled) sailboat), in the late 1960s. Now he is the largest
manufacturer of small catamarans in the world. Designed as a boat that you
could easily launch into the surf from the beach, sail, and bring back through
the surf, these rugged and easy-to-sail boats are perfect for a beginner to
learn the basics. Hobie models range from 12 foot, designed for one person, to
a 22-footer that requires a crew of two. If you have never sailed and can swim,
try one of these. The framed original pastel, presented in a 4" wide driftwood-colored hardwood
frame and matching filet (double matted dark marine blue on marine blue suede
with an outer dimension of 38" x 46"), is available for $5,900.00. Limited
edition prints of the original painting and note cards are also available.
