Sunday at Johnson Cove
I painted this peaceful
scene on a Sunday afternoon while sitting on a dock along Johnson
Cove. The water and sky were painted wet-on-wet watercolor with large
brushes. The rest of the scene was painted dry brush after the paper
dried with fine brushes. For many US rural community residents, including
these hard-working fishermen at Johnson Cove, Sunday is a day of well-deserved
rest. US Highway 13 crosses the
17-mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel that connects the South
Hampton Roads area and the cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth,
and Chesapeake with Virginia's Eastern Shore, the southernmost portion
of the Delmarva Peninsula. The region is mostly farmland interspersed
with small fishing communities and scenic waterways like the one depicted
in this watercolor. Located to the west of Route 13, Johnson Cove
and nearby Johnsontown are unincorporated communities in Northampton
County, VA. The original watercolor
is in a private collection but limited edition prints and note cards
are available. Click
