Wallops Island Dunes

Distinctly different from my other artwork, I painted this delicate, almost ethereal watercolor on-site and all alone. For the entire time I was there, it was as though nothing else existed - some seagulls, waves breaking onshore, and me.

From 1978-1980, my husband, Ken, and I taught marine ecology and oceanography to pre-college and college students at the Wallops Island Marine Science Consortium. I often led field trips to Wallops Island, a 6 square mile (15.5 km2) island off the east coast of Virginia. Although the next island southwest of Assateague and Chincoteague Islands, popular tourist destinations, this island is off-limits to the general public so our students got to study a relatively pristine barrier Island ecosystem.

Wallops Flight Facility, is operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center primarily as a rocket launch site to support science and exploration missions for NASA and other federal agencies. Since 1945, the Wallops Test Range has launched more than 14,000 research vehicles off Wallops Island in the quest for information on the flight characteristics of airplanes, launch vehicles, and spacecraft, and to increase the knowledge of the Earth's upper atmosphere and the near space environment.

The original pastel watercolor is in a private collection but limited edition prints and note cards are available.
